Bankstown airport, which focuses primarily business and charter aviation services, is leading the way in it’s introduction of Australia’s first hydrogen fuel for aircraft through it’s partnership with aircraft developer AMSL Aero.
This is being achieved by Aeria Management Group (AMG), the parent company of Bankstown airport introducing infrastructure capable of supplying fuel and other support services for AMSL Aero’s hydrogen powered vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft Vertiia.
“The landmark development of hydrogen-fueled aircraft by AMSL Aero at Bankstown Airport puts us in the cockpit for shaping a more sustainable and innovative aviation ecosystem for future generations.” Daniel Jarosch AMG CEO
This is seen as a great step forward in achieving the goals of the Aviation Green paper issued by the Australian government on 7th September 2023 which in itself is working towards policy directions concerning aircraft emissions as far ahead as 2050.
With AMSL Aero and Bankstown Airport leading the charge in adopting hydrogen as aviation fuel, Australia is poised to play a key role in the global transition towards sustainable aviation.” Max York, CEO of AMSL Aero. Who also said “This partnership is also a vital step towards our goals to improve the lives of Australians in the bush by enabling long-distance, efficient aeromedical, passenger, cargo and firefighting flights.”
AMSL Aero, who reportedly received a $3 million grant to aid development of a remote version of their VTOL aircraft Vertiia for the purpose of fighting bushfires, is clearly an example of the expanding interest in hydrogen fueled aviation and the nations overall direction towards zero, or at least minimal, emissions.
