On May 20th-21st, thousands gathered at Nurragingy Reserve, Doonside for the 2023 Blacktown City Medieval Fayre to experience a little of what life may have been like back in the Middle Ages.
Amongst many other activities and shows, Fayre goers witnesses real Blacksmiths and other skilled artisans of the period working their trade along with examples of medieval themed foods for those who might like a literal “taste” of the past. Better yet, there was enough variety available for sale for those who may have wished to take home a few mementos, or perhaps to add to their own collection of medieval goods and garb.
The Medieval Fayre was far more than just a marketplace to sell medieval paraphernalia, it offered a great range of Middle Ages themed entertainment ranging from a Birds of prey show to demonstrations of battle skills, both light hearted and fun to the more serious.
One of the more popular events was the jousting. Where modern day “Knights” battled it out on horseback, dressed in full armour and armed with a long lance and shield, inspired on by the cheers of the crowd at the sound of shattering wood as the tips of the lances struck their opposition leaving splinters on the field of battle. For those seeking more entertainment, there were Vikings and even theatrical fencers, dressed in costume reminiscent of French Musketeers.
One of the features of the weekend was the Medieval Banquet, a night time addition to the Blacktown City Medieval Fayre where guests are expected to come dressed in theme and offered a rather interesting menu promising such mouthwatering delicacies as “cold, sliced animals, including boar, cows and bantams” and “garlic roasted fungus and toadstools”.
The children were also not forgotten during the day as there were arranged activities specifically with kids in mind and even free camel rides for those who might like to experience one of the oldest modes of transport known to man, and just have a bit of fun.
Overall, the weekend was a success with the atmosphere and interaction being friendly and welcoming with smiles and laughing everywhere and, at $10, offered great value compared to similar events. This is definitely one to keep on. your bucket list for next time it comes around!
