Shen Yun revives China’s lost civilization of 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture through classical Chinese dance, taking the audience on a journey through ancient myths and legends. The global phenomenon has captivated audiences of all ages, with its unique blend of traditional Chinese music, choreography and storytelling. Keeping News Local gained exclusive access to the production, with special thanks to our partners, the Canterbury Bankstown Chamber of Commerce, CBCC.
Shen Yun opens the gates to a lost civilization where ancient wisdom and spirituality infused with Buddhist and Taoist values gave birth to everything from medical innovations to dance, opera, architecture, and martial arts. Jason says, “I was taken aback by the costumes, the energy, and the culture. It was quite phenomenal to watch. It shows an incredibly rich civilisation that’s hard to encapsulate. When you appreciate the dance and history, words are not necessary…the music is sufficient to give an enriching, enlightening, compassionate and fulfilling experience.”Â
Despite decades of communist rule, Shen Yun celebrates and revives China’s rich cultural heritage, conveying the depth and breadth of genuine Chinese culture on stage. “I was born in China,” says Alice. “The Chinese communist party tells you what to do, and you must follow. I came to Australia in 1990, and I thought I was a true Chines and know all about my culture. But after watching Shen Yun in Australia, I realised I don’t know Chinese culture at all. I have been told only what the community party want to tell me: I’ve been told how to think and how to talk. Shen Yun brings back our original thinking, our compassion. I feel Chinese people are sad because they don’t have the opportunity to know the truth.”
In addition to the costumes, Shen Yun’s performances also feature a live orchestra, which blends traditional Chinese instruments with classical Western instruments to create a unique and mesmerising sound. The music ranges from upbeat and energetic to hauntingly beautiful and is an integral part of the storytelling in each performance.
Each performance consists of about 20 pieces, ranging from the elegance of Tang court ladies to the battlefield heroics of valiant generals and the philosophical works of Lao-Tzu. Antoinette says “the performance came to life through the storytelling of the characters they displayed. I was able to understand what they went through at the time through their dancing. They had a lot of inspiration through their beliefs.” Some pieces also touch upon the topic of today’s China, shedding light on the oppression many experience for their spiritual beliefs. Audience members find these tales of courage to be touching and uplifting. “Due to what they were going through at the time they had to relate to a higher power, and that was where they called upon the heavens, and the heavens responded by sending help,” concludes Antoinette.Â
One of the hallmarks of Shen Yun’s performances is its use of digital backdrops, which create a stunning and immersive visual experience for the audience. The backdrops range from majestic mountains and serene lakes to bustling cities and ancient temples, transporting the audience to different times and places. Sandra further comments and says, “the costumes are amazing and the energy is great. It was touching to see the moves of the ballet. It seems that life seemed a lot simpler in those days. There are some deep and powerful scenes that take you on an emotional journey.” The use of technology in Shen Yun’s performances adds a modern twist to the traditional art forms, creating a unique and captivating experience.
Founded in 2006, Shen Yun has performed for millions of people in over 40 countries, earning praise for its stunning visuals, breath-taking choreography, and powerful messages. “The cultural integration and understanding what China was like before communism,” says Jessica. “The imperial dances, the way they move and the costumes are really inspirational.” Shen Yun has toured to around 150 cities worldwide each year, receiving thunderous applause and accolades from full houses everywhere. Some audience members even drive hundreds of miles to see the show or watch it multiple times. The stunning visual and emotional experience is dramatic and must be seen with your own eyes to truly appreciate and experience their artistry that will leave you in awe.
