A “girl next door” is how many have described, 22-year-old Emily Bochno, who has recently begun her career in the modelling industry.
We met Emily in April while covering Natalie Hua’s short documentary-style film “Beyond Gender,” and although all those involved had an interesting story to tell, it was her professionalism and the following statement from Emily that made us delve a little deeper, as it showed a sense of duality in that being a model is often stereotypically associated solely with attractive looks:
“If I walked into a room right now, me looking like this, and I said I want to start a business I would get a few turning heads like, ‘what is she up to?’ They wouldn’t see past what I look like.”
However, Emily explains how she wants to distance herself from just being an image to being able to shine in what she calls “her own way.” Emily also went on to say how she was regularly active in the lifestyle / content creation modelling circles, as she has been described as a “girl next door” and believes that this is also where her personality shines the most.
Unlike many, Emily did not aspire to be a model since childhood and in her words, “in 2021 I was going into a ‘trust my gut’ era, and therefore decided to do a random photoshoot. I think it is an evolution of my background as a recreational dancer and therefore felt as if I had fallen in love with the arts again.”
Emily explained her humble beginnings, making a year-long commitment to the fashion honours graduates of 2022 UTS Fashion: “I think I really admire the process of getting a ‘great shot’ – the feeling that comes when you are proud of something you make, is something I keep getting when I model. That boost of serotonin!”
Being available every few weeks or so to model for their assessments and got to participate as a model in her first ‘catwalk’, so named after the gentle and delicate way a cat often walks.
“I cannot express how much my confidence improved and also being in one modelling project for a year really made me feel like I grew with each of the fashion designers I was involved with,” said Emily.
Earlier this year Emily took another major step in developing her career by appearing in Natalie Hua’s film. “‘Beyond Gender’ is my first production as a model / public speaker, and this challenge is something that I definitely worried about too much but, the whole day really showed me another side to the industry that I would not have experienced otherwise.”
Keeping News Local are proud of this local girl next door and look forward to seeing her shine in her future endeavours.
